God's Timing is Always Perfect

Saturday, 21st August 2010

One of the biggest events in the history of the Loh family takes place tomorrow, and it's none other than the celebration of my dad's 75th birthday.

The idea of this party was mooted about as early as three years ago in March 2007, when we celebrated my mom's 70th birthday.  However, given that my dad is a doctor and a prominent church leader, the scale was expected to be different.  Whereas my mom's was a cosy affair with just 11 tables, it was anticipated that my dad's would be at least 25 to 30 tables.

I am therefore very grateful and thankful to God for His wonderful and perfect timing.  He had arranged such that I would Chair my company's Dinner and Dance in Feb 2010 and also co-Chair my company's Teambuilding event in May 2010 (of which I was put in charge of the gala dinner).  The experience He gave me from those two events in terms of coordinating with the keyboardist, photographer, banquet manager, sound engineer, cake delivery person, table arrangements, etc has come in extremely handy.  Thank you Lord Jesus!

I am also thankful that at the workplace, the annual audits for the countries that I have been put in charge have been completed, so I could take some days of leave off work in the past 2 weeks to put together the program for the evening.  This has been the most challenging but at the same time most rewarding part of organising this event.

At first, I was thinking of doing a video montage, similar to the ones I did for my mom's 70th in 2007 and my wifey's 40th last year.  However, given the scale and significance of this party, the Lord impressed upon me that it should be more interactive in nature.  Hence, what has resulted is 75 powerpoint slides showcasing the various facets and interests of my dad, of which audience participation is going to be a key and integral part. You can imagine that there were hundreds upon hundreds of photos to sieve through and choose from, and I had to narrow it down to only 75 :-)

I am by nature quiet and conservative, so a video montage would have been the safer option.  However, God has been putting in me quite a bit of creative juices of late, and I have even started to enjoy speaking in public (thanks to the numerous opportunities given to me at my workplace where I have had to speak to an audience of 150-200, so addressing about 275 guests tomorrow night will be an incremental step up rather than a quantum leap).  Once again, God's timing is perfect!!!  Amen?

Anyway, some of the 75 slides (slides 1 through 11 and slides 69 to 75 to be more precise) have been put up on Facebook as a sneak peek into what is in store.  You can view them here:

The highlight of the program is called "75 Revelations about My Dad" and the 75 selected photographs as mentioned above will be used to unveil to the audience what my dad is to each of them. That's all I can reveal for now.  I will only upload the rest of the slides after the party so as not to spoil the surprise for the guests.

[Afternote: all 75 slides have now been uploaded to Facebook for your viewing pleasure]
Oh ya, and just in case you are wondering why there is a slide with a picture of my car in it (slide 69), this is because I intend to preach a "mini-sermon" on the significance of the numbers 7 and 5.  Heheh :-)

Thank you Lord for causing everything to settle nicely in place in time for the grand event tomorrow night.  I want to give all glory and honour to You, because unless You build the house, we labour in vain.  Praise you, Jesus!

Will blog about the party, so stay tuned :-)

I Will versus I Am

Sunday, 8th August 2010

Rev Reuben Ng was preaching at the youth service today, so my wife and I decided to accompany our kids to that service :-)

The series "Help...I'm" is still on going and the topic today was "Help... I'm Unholy".  Rev Reuben explained that many of us Christians struggle with living holy and righteous lives because we start with the wrong premise of "I will".  If we use our own self-efforts, then we are bound to fail.  On the other hand, if we start on the premise that "I am", for example I am already holy and righteous because of what Jesus has done for me on the cross, then we will be empowered by the Holy Spirit to live that out.

The key verse of the sermon was 2 Cor 5:21. which tells us that "Jesus who knew no sin, became sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ".  The original text did not have the word "might", in other words, we are the righteousness of God in Christ.  There was a divine exchange that took place on the cross.

To better illustrate the above, Rev Reuben got 2 volunteers to go up on stage.  One of them was made to wear an ACS tshirt and the other an RI tshirt.  The one with the ACS tshirt represents Jesus, while the one in the RI tshirt represents sinful man.  He then got them to exchange tshirts, so that the one who was supposed to be Jesus now wore the RI tshirt, while the one representing fallen man got to wear the ACS tshirt.

Rev Reuben that said that was exactly what happened at the cross.  Jesus became the worst sinner ever in the eyes of God (and God had to forsake Him as a result), and in exchange man can be considered holy and righteous.  Hallelujah!  My daughter could understood such an amazing and profound spiritual truth.  And my son could as well, since he is after all from ACS.  Apologies to those RI guys out there -- this was just an illustration okay :-)

Another new revelation that Rev Reuben unveiled was that Lucifer was the one who kept on using the phrase "I will".  Just in Isa 14, this appears no less than 5 times, viz:

12 How you have fallen from heaven,
O morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart,
"I will ascend to heaven;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High."

On the other hand, contrast this with Jesus, who used the phrase "I am" numerous times throughout the gospels, eg. "I am the bread of life.", "I am the resurrection and the life". "I am the good shepherd", etc.  Now that we are in Christ, we should likewise be imitators of Him and declare "I am holy." and "I am righteous" and by aligning ourselves with what His Word says of us in 2 Cor 5:21, that we are indeed the righteousness of God in Christ, it empowers us to live out holy and righteous lives.

Hitting the Jackpot at Marina Bay Sands

Sunday, 1st August 2010

I was at Marina Bay Sands today...
with my wife and both my kids.

And I had a windfall to boot!!! :-)

Before the religious folks out there start to throw stones at me, and accuse me of not only going to the Casino on the Lord's Day but even having the gall to bring my entire family along with me as well, please let me put on record that I was there not to gamble but to feed on the Living Word of God :-)

Seriously...

Yup, New Creation Church had its overflow rooms not at Suntec City's Gallery West but at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre.

On the way to church, we did pass by the casino, and I took a photo of the entrance, heheh...

But we continued walking on and came across a poster giving directions informing us that the service was to be held at Hall F.

Just before entering the hall, I stopped in front of a banner and asked my daughter to take a picture of me, acting cute :-)

And I heard Ps Prince preach one of his best sermons ever, about beholding Jesus in the Scriptures and by doing so, we are metamorphosed from glory to glory. It really ministered to me and addressed issues that I have been grappling with in the past couple of weeks.  This was indeed a windfall to me, better than striking the jackpot.  Thank you Lord Jesus!!!

But I will leave it to someone like Geri to blog about the contents :-)
