Paroxysm: More Sold Out To Him!

Tuesday, 6 February 2007

Just two days ago, RevBarnz preached a most awesome and anointed sermon entitled "I Need To Hear From You (Part 2). IMHO, it was his best sermon ever! [When it comes to preachers, I tend to set very high standards and expectations, and that sermon of his is up there with the best I have ever heard.]

Listen to Pastor B's sermon "I Need To Hear From You (Part 2)" by clicking here.

The anointing of the LORD was truly upon him, especially when he stepped out from behind the pulpit's rostrum and moved towards the centre of the altar area. When the Holy Spirit's anointing is upon someone, that person becomes so equipped with the message that God has placed in his heart to bring forth, that he becomes an instrument of the Holy Spirit that does not need to rely on a prepared script. That is the very reason why I hold Rev Wee Boon Hup and Pastor Joseph Prince in such high regard :-)

Anyway, this sermon was a continuation of the one he preached the previous week, and he reminded us that we should never stop declaring the mighty deeds of the LORD (Psalm 73:28) (thanks, Pastor B, because that is exactly the purpose of this blog).

RevBarnz also showed us a video clip of the late Steve Irwin, whose passion was for the animals in the wild life. His challenge to us as Christians was to care for our fellow "human life" with the same degree of passion.

This challenge resonated so strongly in me because it brought to mind a song that I enjoyed listening to back in 1995. Thanks to the recommendation of my youngest sister, Yvonne, I became a big fan of a Christian rock band called WhiteHeart who was taking the world by storm. At their concerts. they would always hold altar calls to invite pre-believers who were brought by their Christian friends, and hundreds would respond by going up onstage to accept Christ.

Anyway, their song entitled "More Sold Out" poses us a similar challenge to what RevBarnz had encouraged us to do, and that is to have a passionate commitment to the cause of Christianity. (which by the way is the title of the book that our cells are currently using).

["Sold out" is a slang for being "extremely passionate, committed, focussed and faithful to a particular cause", and is said especially of someone who used to support an opposite cause before].

As descendents of Adam, we used to be belong to the god of this world. After receiving Christ, however, we are now a new creation. The old things have passed away, and behold the new has come (2 Cor 5:17). We are now "sold out" to Jesus, as it were.

"More Sold Out" mentions a racist clan, a secular rap band and a satan worshipper going about their business with a sense of purpose and dedication. In other words, they were "sold out" to what they believed in. The question is then posed as to whether we as Christians are being equally, if not more, passionate about the cause of our Lord. In other words, are we more "sold out" to Jesus than the world is "sold out" to their beliefs?

The song contains the following challenge:
"Are they working harder at what we think is wrong, than we are in what we know is right?"

But the climax comes towards the end of the song, when Whiteheart declares," We're not gonna sit back and let them take control, when we've got His power in our soul.

Sold out! They might be sold out to sin. Sold out! Gotta take a look inside what do you see? Are you and me, more sold out to Him?

Listening to this song is supposed to invoke paroxysm (Greek: paraxusmos) -- ie. the stirring up of the emotions so as to provoke and stimulate one another towards love and good deeds, and all the more when we see the Day of the Lord approaching (Heb 10:24-25).

So let's be more sold out to Him! Amen?

The clan is marching up and down the street
Speaking out from under a sheet
They say they’re saving their neighborhood
They really believe they’re doing good
Are they working harder at what we think is wrong
than we are at what we know is right?

Beastie Boys has got a Number One
They just say it’s harmless fun
And while they’re rapping to the bank
Dissention runs through the family ranks
Are they working harder at what we think is wrong
than we are at what we know is right?

Chorus:

Sold out -- they might be sold out to sin
Sold out -- gotta take a look
inside what do you see?
Are you and me… more sold out to Him?

Met a devil woman just the other day
"Divide the home”, is what she prayed
Even read the Bible in front of me!
She said, “You got to know your enemy”.
Are we gonna sit back and let them take control
When we’ve got His power in our soul?

We're not gonna sit back and let them take control When we've got His power in our soul
