Guess Who Dropped By?

Thursday, 30th October 2008

I have Sitemeter installed on my blog. Besides tracking the number of visits each day, it also tracks where the visits are from, such as IP address, country, the operating system, browser etc.

Anyway, I chanced across a visitor that dropped in at about 5pm on 21 October 2008.

Guess where he or she is from? ;-)

Dear brother/sister-in-Christ, welcome to my humble blog. Was just wondering if you read the entry entitled Wouldn't It Be Good/Wishful Thinking. If so, please do provide upward feedback :-)

101 Lies Taught in Church Every Week

Wednesday, 29th October 2008

Yesterday, I was commenting about how the visitors from ROOTSS have suddenly spiked due to links from other sites in blogosphere.

Well, among them is one in particular that caught my eye, and it is entitled Jiaeenn29's Weblog.

I do not know who this blogger is, but it appears that she has gone through a similar spiritual journey in searching for a church that provides the right kind of feeding.

Previously from another church, she currently attends NewCre, and is also a big fan of Dr Steve McVey, who is the pastor of GraceWalk Ministries.

Through her blog, I was led to the video-log that Dr McVey had put up about entitled 101 Lies Taught In Church Every Sunday, which would have caused ripples (no, make that a major tsunami) in the world of Christendom. If this happened during Biblical times, he would have been stoned for blasphemy, no less :-D

Anyway, Dr McVey has been a pastor for about 20 years, and his theology is similar to Ps Prince in that he also preaches strongly and uncompromisingly about the gospel of grace and the finished work of Jesus on the cross.

With regards to "101 Lies", here is the introduction...

A Wider Audience

Tuesday, 28th October 2008

I was checking out the Sitemeter on my blog recently and discovered that there has been a spike in visitors to ROOTSS again, especially in the last couple of weeks.

There were 2 other times when this happened before. The first was in August/September 2007 when news first broke about my being removed from church leadership. The second was in July 2008 when the story about my being summoned to the police station in connection with a vandalism that took place in my church surfaced. The visitors on both previous occasions were mainly fellow church members curious to know what was happening.

Well, this time around, the reason has gone beyond my church. Instead, it is because of the recent publicity about NewCre in the press. Visitors have arrived via links placed in other blogs such as Blogpastor, Stillhaventfound, King David, Skillful Shepherds and Random Musings from a Doctor's Chair.

Just like how Ps Prince's ministry has now gone beyond the 20,000 in NewCre to hundreds of thousands worldwide, I thank the LORD that the reach of ROOTSS has also now gone beyond PLMC to hundreds of others out there in blogosphere. Hallelujah and PTL!

25 Years On: The Best is Still Yet to Be

Monday, 27th October 2008

Since today is a holiday, I have decided to blog for a third consecutive day :-D

I was just analysing my FB fren list again, and noticed that the ones that I have most in common (ie. mutual friends) are actually those from my Sec 4 cohort, ie ACS 1983.

In particular, the one who set up the FB group (whom we affectionately call Phangko) has a total of 31 mutual friends with me!

Then, there are others which number range from the high-teens to the mid-twenties.

Speaking of which, our cohort we will be having our 25th Anniversary Reunion Party this coming Friday at SubUrbia in Sentosa.

I have not seen many of them since we left ACJC at the end of 1985, so it will be a good time to catch up on the good ol' days and to exchange name cards.

And I will not be surprised if the DJ spins the fabulous songs of the 1980s like those from Duran Duran, Ultravox, Wham and Spandau Ballet to keep us in a nostalgic mood.

Will keep you guys posted about the event.

Till then, have a great week ahead, ya?

Facebook Friends - An Analysis and A Revelation

Sunday, 26th October 2008

Recently, more and more of my current colleagues have either been adding me or I have been adding them as Facebook friends.

Just this month alone, there must have been at least 20 of them :-D

So out of curiosity, I decided to run through the entire list of 285 FB frens to see how many are current colleagues. They make up about 9%.

Ex-colleagues from PwC and Infineon make up a good 12% each, while old classmates from ACS and ACJC make up another 11%.

But what took me by surprise is that the majority or some 20% of them are actually from my church!

Here's how they are distributed:

PLMC 20%
PwC 12%
Infineon 12%
AC S/JC 11%
Walton 9%
ROOTSS 8%
Family 7%
Others 7%
NewCre 6%
NTU 4%
Soccer 4%

As I reflected upon this, I felt the LORD reminding me that even though a handful of churchmates have either removed me or refused to accept me as their FB fren because they want to avoid the controversy, PLMC still remains the greatest circle of influence at present.

And that has encouraged me to continue to share my discovery of gourmet food with my fellow beggars, so to speak. (sorry chaps, no offence meant there).

Thank you LORD for placing me in the midst of the 2nd largest Methodist Church in Singapore, and I will continue to carry out the mission You have entrusted upon me to share the gospel of grace and the finished work of your Son Jesus Christ with my fellow church members. Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!

Reaping Bountifully

Saturday, 25th October 2008

Two months back, I blogged about how the LORD impressed upon me to sow bountifully into One-North.

Well, God has proved Himself faithful (yet again!), because I just received fabulous news a couple of days back! I cannot go into too much details at this point in time, but suffice it to say that He is causing that miracle seed to grow which will result in me reaping bountifully, exceedingly abundantly above what I could ever imagine, and the harvest will happen sometime in January 2009 :-)

I have shared this fantastic news with my wife and a couple of close friends of mine, and also told them that I felt led by the Lord to sow the entire first month's sum back again into One-North as a firsfruit. Will share with you readers again when I sow that firstfruit back into One-North sometime in February 2009.

Ps Prince shared last week on Heb 12:27 viz
The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

The shaking that is going on in the world at the moment is so that the things that are unshakable will remain. Created things which are man-made such as the equities and bond markets have become so unpredictable and wise is the man who does not put his trust in the things of the world.

On the other hand, the things that are God-ordained such as tithing and sowing into the lives and ministries of anointed pastors are founded upon His unshakable Word, and wise is the man who puts his trust in the things of God.

The tithe

The principle of tithing was established even before the Law. We read in Heb 7:1 that Abraham gave Melchizedek "a tenth of everything" and Abraham lived before Moses. So tithing still applies to the New Covenant believer. We also read about how much God prospered Abraham and the blessings of Abraham are now ours to inherit.

The offering

Offerings are over and above the tithe and are best channeled towards anointed ministries where the person of Jesus and His finished work are magnified. In Gal 6:6, Paul tells us to bless pastors that give us the right kind of feeding.

Let him who receives instruction in the Word [of God] share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support].

I thank the Lord for His progressive relevation to me about how to prosper, yes even during times of recession. Tithing may sound like something foolish and ridiculous to the world, but even the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of man (1 Cor 1:25). Amen?

A Discussion on "Living by 'Thou-Shalt-Nots' "

Sunday, 19th October 2008

Two weeks ago, there was an article published in the Sunday Times on 5 Oct 08 about New Creation Church, which I have scanned and put on my blog here.

Well since then, a person by the name of Mr Winston Chin wrote in response to that, and his letter was published in the Sunday Times on 12 Oct 08, which is reproduced below:

I'd rather live by the thou-shalt-nots

I refer to last Sunday's feature, 'Church pastors like none other'.

I have mused on attending the Sunday services of the two megachurches to find out why they are such big draws.

Your report has confirmed my observation and views.

* They appear more like motivational institutions where the teachings centre on 'all aspects of a person's development and needs' and the premise that one's good works 'require one to first better (oneself) financially'.

* The congregation is made up largely of those in their mid-30s and 40s who are probably ambitious, up-and-coming individuals, and who want to believe that they can thrive by 'receiving God's charity instead of living by the thou-shalt-nots'.

* There seems to be much stress on a stylish lifestyle here and now, rather than on the here and thereafter.

* The churchgoers seem to worship their pastors as role models, and probably go in droves for their Sunday preaching on prosperity, success and financial blessings, and also to be part of the mega commercial projects that put many a publicly listed company to shame.

For me, I am perfectly happy to live by all traditional thou-shalt-nots which are biblical.

My wife and I were at the first service this morning, and Ps Prince referred to the letter briefly. He said that since the writer wanted so much to live by the "thou-shalt-nots", how about starting with "thou shalt not judge?" :-)

Mr Chin's letter was filled with judgement calls, but what really took the cake was that these statements of judgements were based on speculation and hearsay; he did not attend the services to hear the messages for himself. I was reminded of the incident recorded in Jn 1:46 when Nathanael aka Bartholomew was told about the Messiah and his initial response was "Can anything good come out from Nazareth?"

So it warmed my heart when I came back home later and saw an article published in today's Sunday Times in response to Mr Chin's letter. This lady by the name of Ms Christie Loh went to hear the sermons for herself, so she is in a better position that Mr Chin to make a judgement call, if we can call it that. Here's her letter...

Keep an open mind even if you live by thou-shalt-nots

I refer to the letter by Mr Winston Chin, 'I'd rather live by the thou-shalt-nots', published last Sunday. In it, he referred to a piece titled 'Church pastors like none other', published in The Sunday Times on Oct 5, which had featured the founders of two of Singapore's so-called megachurches: New Creation Church (NCC) and City Harvest Church.

I find it sad that Mr Chin felt the report had confirmed his observations and views of the two churches.

Just as it takes time and effort to get to know a person, it takes time and effort to get to know a church, its pastors and the doctrines they expound. An open mind and a non-judgmental attitude are also prerequisites.

Let me state from the outset that my husband and I are members of a traditional church. However, for the past few months, we have been visitors at NCC. We wanted to observe the services first-hand, so we could establish if the doctrines being expounded were biblical. This was because our son was keen to join NCC as a member.

We had obviously heard disturbing talk about NCC and Pastor Joseph Prince. However, we did not want to rely on hearsay. Instead, we wanted to make a fair and objective assessment.

No church or organisation is perfect - not NCC nor the church that my husband and I belong to. What mattered to us was which doctrines were being taught and who was being glorified.

We are sorry to disappoint the critics of NCC.

Over the past few months, we have not heard Pastor Prince glorify himself. His bible-based messages constantly focus on God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

In one sermon, he noted that he would have failed in his task if NCC members went away saying he was a great speaker. He considers his job done only when they say Jesus has been glorified during his sermon.

Mr Chin's letter does, however, serve a very useful purpose for the two megachurches. It warns of the perils that can surface when large, successful churches let their guard down and lose their focus.

What a Spirit-filled response, and what gives it even more credibility is that Ms Loh is *NOT* from NewCre. If it was a letter from a member of NewCre, there would be people who would say," of course he say that lah, after all he from that church mah."

Speaking of which, here are another 2 letters that have been sent to the Sunday Times, which have not yet been published. The first is also from someone *NOT* from NewCre but got persecuted by his own pastors because he embraces the teachings from NewCre. The second is from a member of NewCre who used to be from a traditional church.

I was ostracised by my pastor because of Ps Prince's teachings

I read with great interest the article written by Tan Dawn Wei entitled “From Stutter to Charisma” which appeared in the Sunday Times about Ps Joseph Prince of New Creation Church.

I can attest especially to the part that reads, "It is a message that doesn’t sit well with the traditionalists, and he knows it. “People say that if you preach this, then everyone can do whatever he wants, But the amazing thing is when people believe right, they live right.”

I have been attending a Methodist church since the day I was born. My late great-grandfather was a Methodist pastor, so that would make me a “4th-generation Methodist”. I was so steep in my beliefs to the extent that I looked down upon non-denominational churches because I thought they were filled with “crazy charismatics” who in their pursuit of worldly pleasures such as prosperity and wealth would give money to their churches blindly so that their pastors could live in big houses and drive flashy cars.

So I can identify with readers like Winston who says that he prefers to live by the “thou-shalt-nots”.

My opinion changed when I encountered a series of personal crises between 1997 and 2004, and my own church and church leaders could not provide any answers. I even started to question my own faith! While seeking for answers, God led me to the truth through an ex-colleague who attends New Creation Church sometime in Aug 2005. My view of Christianity started to change and I began to experience one miraculous breakthrough after another in my life.

As a result of this, I started to promote the teachings of NewCre to my own fellow church members. Just like a beggar who had just discovered gourmet food, I had but to share this good news with those around me.

Alas, this did not go down well with my pastors. At that time, I was serving as both a cell leader and the Church Treasurer. They summoned me into their office one day in Jan 2007 and gave me an ultimatum -- either stop promoting the teachings of NewCre or they would remove me from church leadership.

To cut a long story short, I was made to step down from both posts in Jul 2007, and my cell group was even disbanded sometime in Dec 2007! When there was a case of vandalism that took place in my church a few months ago, I was even implicated and had to go to the police station for questioning!

But I have no regrets about all that has happened, and have forgiven those that have wronged me, because I hold fast to the promise in the Bible that says “in all things God works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.” Through Ps Prince, God had revealed to me what the true gospel is – God’s unmerited favour for us based on the finished work of His Son Jesus on the cross – and I will not trade that for anything in the world.

The apostle Paul himself said that he considered all the titles that he had earned up to the point of knowing Jesus as “rubbish” compared to knowing Jesus, and I share those sentiments of his exactly :-)

No prizes for guessing who wrote the above letter :-)

Here's another one from someone who used to attend a Methodist Church and has now comfortably settled down in NewCre. He is a lawyer so I sought (and obtained) his permission to reproduce in full the letter that he wrote to the press.

Dear Sirs,

I refer to Winston Chin's letter published on 12 October 2008 in the Sunday Times, "I'd rather live by the thou-shalt-nots" which commented on the 5 October 2008 Sunday Times feature, "Church pastors like none other".

Winston left the impression with his readers that that the two mega-churches mentioned in the 5 October 2008 article do not adhere with the "traditional thou-shalt nots" and that the motivation for attending church was because churchgoers "worship" their pastors as role models who preach a message of "prosperity, success and financial blessing".

I am a lawyer practising corporate law and have been attending New Creation Church since my undergraduate days in the 1990s. I am therefore in a position to correct some of the views expressed by Winston in his letter.

At New Creation Church, the goal is for permanent heart transformation and not just mere behaviour modification. To this end, the pastors at our church endeavour to magnify the person and the ministry of Jesus Christ in their preaching. We believe, and this is biblical (John 8:11), that once an individual truly understands and receives into his heart the gift of no condemnation from God, there is power to "sin no more" in his life.

The "thou-shalt-nots" are thus not ignored at New Creation Church. On the contrary, we esteem them highly and in this regard hold that they are impossible to keep perfectly except by and through the empowering Grace of Jesus Christ.

It is also not true that the motivation for attending church is that we somehow idolize our pastors for the popular "prosperity" message that they preach. Personally, and for the vast majority of churchgoers, the motivation for attending church is that we each have experienced personal revival because the preaching from the New Creation pulpit is full of Jesus Christ and make the pages of the bible come alive.

As a lawyer, I also appreciate the clear, concise and expository preaching from New Creation Church pastors. By many accounts, and I agree as well, New Creation Church is the finest teaching church in Singapore.

My hope is for Winston to visit New Creation Church for himself and not rely on the 5 October 2008 article to form his views. Winston, seek and you shall find.

With Kindest Regards,
YEO Choon Meng Terence

By the way, Terence complies notes of Ps Prince's sermons each week that he preaches. If you would like a copy, do write to him at judev21@yahoo.com.sg so that he can add you to his mailing list.

The Biggest Bail Out

Saturday, 18th October 2008

In recent times, there has been nothing but bad news in the newspapers. Major banks and financial institutions that appeared to be sound have either collapsed or are on the brink of collapse, so much so that the governments and central banks have had to step in to prevent things getting from bad to worse.

The latest buzzword is "bail out" and reactions to this by the "man in the street" have mostly been negative. After all, these folks got into trouble by their own greed and since they made their bed, so to speak, they have to lie in it.

But if one were to step back and look at the situation again, there are several spiritual lessons to be drawn from this:

The first and most obvious one would be that we live in a fallen world and something like this is a reminder that we cannot trust even the best of man's efforts. We have to keep fixing our eyes upon Jesus.

The second would be that these are signs that the end of the world is nigh. Jesus did say that the signs of His second coming would be earthquakes, wars, rumours of war, famine, etc. However, we who are under the New Covenant need not be afraid because we will be raptured before the worst happens.

The third, which in my own opinion is the most important, is that this "bail out" is actually a fantastic example of "undeserved favour". The system of justice and fairness that has been ingrained in us ever since Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil tells us "do good, get good. do bad get beat", and that same system tells us that those investment bankers did not deserve to be bailed out because of their greed.

But before we start to point fingers at them with self-righteous pride, let us remember that a bail out also took place 2,000 years ago. Sinful mankind was destined to spend an eternity in hell, but God intervened. He bailed us out, not with US$1 billion dollars, but with Someone who is worth infinite times more than that. Paul said in Rom 5:8 that "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us". I don't know about you, but that sure sounds like a bail-out to me. In fact, what Jesus did was an overpayment over and above all the sins of mankind put together, past present and future.

As I reflect upon the recent bail-outs, as well as the guarantees that are being given by central banks, I thank the LORD for the biggest bail out in the history of mankind, and the seal of guarantee that the Holy Spirit places upon every believer that we belong to Him (2 Cor 1:22). Hallelujah!

TGFFB

Sunday, 12th October 2008

Several months ago, I got myself a Facebook account. My wife followed suit and then my son.

My daughter initially said that this application was for "older" people and would only consider getting one after her PSLE.

Well, her exams ended 4 days ago, and she FINALLY relented and got herself an account too :-)

The comments made by her cousin Chloe (Marcus' daughter) sums it up...

Anyway, the latest add-on application to FB that is taking users by storm is called "We're Related" which allows one to link family and relatives. I found it really cool and have now linked my wife and kids accordingly.

Which goes to show that we are creatures of community, which was the way God designed us. After all, He Himself, being the Triune God, is a representation of community in its highest form.

Thank God for Facebook (TGFFB) :-)

Four Letter Words :-)

Saturday, 11th October 2008

Back in the 80s, there was a song made popular by Frankie Goes to Hollywood called "Relax". There were even shirts with the words, "Frankie Says Relax" that sold by the thousands.

Well, before they could say it, God already said so. Read on...

I have been a Christian since 1979 when I accepted the Lord at the Billy Graham Crusade. Thanks to having attended Sunday School, I was familiar with the stories in the Bible such as Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, etc.

One of the most exciting stories was about the Israelites and how God had set them free from the Egyptians and led them into Canaan, the land promised to their patriach Abraham, the land flowing with milk and honey. However, they had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years because 10 of the 12 spies did not believe God would give them the land.

Well, I have been on a similar spiritual journey. Even though I have been a Christian for more than half my earthly life, I had also been wandering in the spiritual wilderness and not possessing what God has already given to me through the finished work of His Son on the cross...

I did not know that prosperity was mine because Jesus became poor on the cross for my sake (2 Cor 8:9).

I did not know that health and wholeness was mine because Jesus took all my sicknesses and diseases upon His own body when He willingly allowed the Roman soldiers to whip and stripe Him (Isa 53:6).

I did not know that righteousness was mine and I could stand boldly before God without shame or guilt because Jesus who knew no sin was made sin for me and had given me His righteousness in exchange (2 Cor 5:21).

And because I was not aware of what the cross had accomplished for me, I was never at peace and felt a sense of restlessness. I was constantly looking for love, acceptance, fulfillment, satisfaction, etc in all the wrong places. In other words, I was never in a state of restfulness...

... until God in His mercy and providence, revealed to me the gospel of grace, through the sermons of Pastor Joseph Prince of New Creation Church. Those of you who have been regular followers of my blog would have read about how Victor, an ex-colleague of mine who attends New Creation Church, would leave his pastor's sermons in a common area in the office for others to borrow, and how one thing led to another, resulting me being in possession of his entire sermon collection from 2001 to date.

Which brings me to the title of today's post.

The first four letter-word I want to talk about is "LAND".

How many of you folks out there have heard sermons or messages telling us that the Promised Land for Christians is the place somewhere beyond the blue called heaven? Well, if that is what we have been led to believe, it is any wonder then why so many Christians are not living a victorious and abundant life while here on earth?

Jesus said in Jn 10:10, "The thief comes to kill, steal and destroy; but I come to give you life and give it more abundantly." Many of us quote the 2nd part of the verse, but forget that Jesus said those words in the same context as the 1st part of the verse. Jesus could not have been referring to eternal life in heaven, because the devil cannot be killing, stealing and destroying in heaven when he has already been cast out from it and is persona non grata.

The devil is killing, stealing and destroying marriages, relationships, possessions, etc here on this earth, and this is where our Lord Jesus wants us to live a life of abundance, prosperity and health so that others will be drawn to the gospel as well. People of the world will not be attracted by spiritual beauty, spiritual riches or spiritual health, so let us not spiritualise passages in the Bible which clearly refer to the material such as the following...

Gen 26
13 The man (Isaac) became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.
14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.

Obviously this reference is to material possessions. If you know of a spiritual sheep or spiritual cattle, please show them to me because I have never come across such before :-P

So what then is the Promised Land for the believer, if it is not the promise of a place in the sweet by and by?

Consider this passage in the book of Numbers where God told the Israelites that they would not enter the Land because of their unbelief, but instead be made to wander in the desert for 40 years:

Num 14
30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun".
31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.
32 But you—your bodies will fall in this desert.
33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert.
34 For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.'
35 I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this desert; here they will die."

Now consider the following passages in the book of Hebrews:

Heb 3
16Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? 17And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the desert?
18And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed
19So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

Heb 4
1Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.
2For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.
3Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest.' "And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world.

Notice how the Holy Spirit inspired the author of the book of Hebrews to refer to that passage in Numbers that Moses had recorded. But notice more significantly how He also replaces the word "land" with the word "rest"!!!

Which is the other four-letter word I wanted to talk about :-)

LAND = REST

So while the Israelites, Abraham's descendents under the Old Covenant were promised, a physical land flowing with milk and honey, we as Abraham's offspring under the New Covenant, are promised a state of restedness, based on the finished work of Christ!

We read that the Israelites lived in houses they did not build, drank from wells they did not dig, and ate from vineyards they did not plant (Deut 6:11). Satan may have put giants in the land to prevent God's people from entering it. But God instead turned that around for good such that all the toiling and sweating were carried out by the previous inhabitants, so the Israelites only needed to boldly enter the land and enjoy the fruits of the previous occupants' labour. Cool eh?

If already under the Old Covenant there was a shadow of restfuless, how much more should we experience the substance of restfulness, established upon better blood and better promises! Amen?

So relak lah brother. Jangan buang current...

From Stutter to Charisma

Sunday, 5th October 2008

In recent weeks, there has been so much negative news being reported in the mass media.

We read of milk being tainted with melanine being produced in China causing hundreds of thousands of children to fall ill.

We read of financial turmoil in the USA, resulting in the US government having to bail out establishments that were supposedly rock-solid.

So it is really a wonderful breath of fresh air that in the midst of all the gloom and doom filling up the daily newspapers, there has also been quite a lot of publicity being given to a particular church in Singapore which:

(i) has registered the fastest growth in the past decade from 2,000 in 1998 t0 more than 20,000 today
(ii) has the most generous congregation in terms of tithes and offerings: net income last year was S$30m.
(iii) will be embarking on the grandest church building project in Singapore at a staggering cost of S$500m.

Just today, another article appeared on page 8 of the Home section of The Sunday Times, which I have scanned and placed on my blog for the sake of you overseas readers. Do read about how God transformed Ps Joseph Prince from a stutterer to the charismatic preacher he is today. (By the way, "charis" is the Greek word for "grace").

God is prospering New Creation Church and causing great and mighty things to happen to this church because His Son is exalted, and His finished work is being emphasised week-in-week-out.

I was at the combined service last week at the Indoor Stadium where the photos accompanying the article was taken.

I was also at the service when the boss of Hexacon Construction who happens to be a Christian, shared about how as a youth, God appeared to him in a dream and told him to build the largest church in Singapore.

Hexacon has built 4 churches so far, and among them are Elim Church and my own home church Paya Lebar Methodist (which cost S$17m back in 1995). What this means is that New Creation would be the 5th church! (By the way, five is the number of grace, just in case you didn't know that already).

What this also means is that by the time One-North is completed in 2012, God will cause her attendance to exceed that of City Harvest. Amen?

Here is the Sunday Times article by Tan Dawn Wei reproduced in full...

BY his own admission, Pastor Joseph Prince is a shy man and a former stutterer.

That is why he has never granted a media interview, preferring to let his lieutenants do the talking.

But walk into New Creation Church’s bookstore – Rock Gifts and Book Centre – at Suntec City or visit the church’s slick website, and you’ll find Ps Prince’s face everywhere.

It’s there on DVDs and book covers and in his sermons played over TV screens. They are even broadcast in countries like the United States and Australia.

No one would believe he is shy if they have seen him preach. The magnetic speaker does so with no help from teleprompters, cue cards or notes.

A teacher who remembered his stammering days in secondary school heard his sermon once and left him a note, calling his transformation “a miracle”.

Lay people may be taken with his polished public speaking skills, but his flock will say it is his teachings that they come for.

It helps that he breaks his sermons down, coats them with humour and peppers them with colloquialism.

And they have come in droves. Since he took over the non-denominational, independent church as senior pastor in 1900, the congregation has grown from 150 to 17,000 today. It’s a number that startles even its founder.

“I’m still frightened,” said Ps Prince, 45, in the church’s stylishly minimalistic office on the sixth floor of Suntec City. “To me, I’m very humbled. Every week when I stand there for four services, once in a while, I still wonder to myself, people are queueing up, for what? This is not Hello Kitty, you know.”

Tall and togged in a dark suit, Ps Prince comes across as easy-going and confident and peppers his speech with “lors” and “lahs”.

But it wasn’t easy to get this interview.

His staff initially turned down The Sunday Times’ request. When he relented two weeks later, they wanted questions before the interview and were anxious to know how the report would come out.

The interview was also recorded on video, complete with spotlight and microphones, for “accountability”, which probably means it will count for evidence should a dispute arise.

Some may say that it is hard to fault the church for being on edge. Since the Commissioner of Charities (COC) released results of its review last month, the church has raised eyebrows for its wealth - $55.4 million for the year ended March 31 – and an announcement that its business arm is raising investments in a cultural and entertainment complex in one-north from $280 million to $499.5 million.

It is partnering property giant CapitaLand to build the project which will have restaurants, shops and a 5,000-seat theatre.

Some have wondered if the church should go into property development, but it has said it should park its surpluses somewhere viable, and it needs the space.

It is paying $784,000 a month to rent the 1,400-seat Rock Auditorium and more than 10 other rooms for its mid-week and Sunday services.

Since the COC review, several Straits Times Forum letter writers have called for religious leaders to disclose their salaries.

When asked how much he earns, Ps Prince asked me how much I make, then said: “I’m well-paid.” He added that his salary is declared to the church’s 340 voting members.

He said he donated his entire bonus last year to the church's building fund. “I’m one of the top five givers to one-north. Money doesn’t have a hold on me,” he said, adding that he chose early on not to be a signatory of the church, which means he has no access to the church’s bank accounts.

He said he has been asking the church council to let him go without pay to “shut the naysayers”. But the council turned him down.

Ps Prince, who is executive chairman of the church council, also dismissed the rumour that his salary is $50,000 a month.

“It could have been $50,000 if I had not voluntarily taken all the pay cuts through the years. There was a system of payment that would actually enrich me greatly but as the church grew, I refuse to accept that system of payment.”

Media consultant-presenter Darryl David, 38, defended his pastor, who is said to live in a classy condominium in District 10 and drives an expensive European car.

“People has traditional ideas of what leaders should be like, that you should live humbly. The man is helping people understand their faith. If he’s paid fairly well, then so be it,” said Mr David.

Born to an Indian father and a Chinese mother, Ps Prince spent eight years – mostly during his primary school days – in Perak where his father was a priest.

He doesn’t care to mention which religion his father belongs to because he found no reality in it, he said. His father was often drunk.

He eventually came back to Singapore and followed an aunt to church. He was then a young man dabbling in the occult, he said, but “supernatural experiences” opened his eyes to Christianity.

He attended Commonwealth Secondary School and went on to finish his A levels at a private school, Our Lady of Lourdes.

In 1984, Ps Prince, then president of a youth ministry in a traditional church, and a group of friends were asked to leave the church, which didn’t agree with their open displays of worship.

They started New Creation Church, preaching from a church leader’s four-room HDB flat in Holland Road. Ps Prince, then still in national service, would preach and rush back to camp.

As the congregation grew from the initial 25, the service was moved to the YWCA, then Grand Central Hotel, before settling in Suntec City’s Rock Auditorium in 1999.

Joseph Prince, by the way, was a name he adopted when he was working as an IT consultant before he became a full-time pastor. “I saw in the Bible that everyone that God raised, he changed their names,” he explained.

To his brethren, Ps Prince has transformed many lives through his preaching of grace which proffers that one should receive God’s charity instead of living by the thou-shalt-nots.

It is a message that doesn’t sit well with the traditionalists, and he knows it. “People say that if you preach this, then everyone can do whatever he wants, But the amazing thing is when people believe right, they live right.”

Ps Prince, who preaches at four hour-long services on Sundays, claims to have no hobbies besides reading, playing with his daughter Jessica, nine, and occasionally keeping his wife company while she watches Korean dramas.

His homemaker wife, Wendy, 35, is a volunteer creative consultant at the church. The two met in church in 1994 and were married a year later.

His spiffy image – possibly borrowed from those Korean dramas – is all her doing. “People think, ‘Wow, you purposely position yourself ah?’ I dress like that because she likes me to dress like that and she’s the only woman I want to impress,” he said with a smile.

Thanks to her, he has long ditched his electric blue jackets for muted one paired with jeans and chunky rings.

It has brought on the swoons. “A lot of girls have crushes on him. I’ve even heard of people who idolize him,” said part-time student and churchgoer Chan Fong, 23.

But Ms Chan was less impressed with Prince’s increasingly larger-than-life personality, the setting up of Joseph Prince Ministries and the DVDs, which she thought was “quite commercialised.”

Joseph Prince Ministries was established in 2007 as a non-profit international ministry.

Ps Prince believes while it is his duty to reach out, his allegiance is still to his congregation, made up largely of people in their 30s and 40s. “I feel if you’re called to be a pastor, be a pastor. I don’t think it’s fair to be drawing too much honorariums for speaking engagements and come back and still draw a salary.”

He has accepted only five such offers this year. “I’m one of the most untraveled pastors of mega-churches. When I travel, I’m homesick all the time.”

Is He Satisfied?

Wednesday, 1st October 2008

As a boy growing up in Sunday School, I remember singing a catchy tune entitled "Is He Satisfied?" and even enjoying it.

Do you ever search your heart
As you watch the day depart?
Is there something way down deep
You try to hide?
If this should be the end
And eternity began
When the Book is opened wide,
Would the Lord be satisfied?

Is He satisfied? Is He satisfied?
Is He satisfied with me?
Have I done my best, have I stood the test?
Is He satisfied with me?

When He walks and talks with men
What if every friend He had were just like me?
Would He feel a welcome here
Or would He go away in tears?
Am I all that I should be?
Is He satisfied with me?

Feeble is the lamp of fame
By which man inscribes his name
On the walls of time for other men to see
Though he boasts of wealth and power
None can help him in that hour
When the angels hear his plea
Is He satisfied with me?

Now having understood the grace gospel, I realise that as noble as the lyrics may be, it is actually an insult to sing it because it is self-occupied rather than Christ-occupied.

Notice that the author makes no reference to the cross.

The question should not be "Is He satisfied with me?" but rather "Is God satisfied with Christ?". And the answer to that would be a resounding yes. Those of us who are "in Christ" need only to rest in His finished work. Amen?
