Don't Call Me A Methodist. Call Me a BenGener!

Sunday, 30th November 2008

A fellow Methodist (let's call him Marco) recently wrote the following article and sent it to the NTI/U Alumni Christian Fellowship ("NTIUaCF") Yahoo! Group:

Our Methodist Heritage

To those faithful Methodists in Singapore,

1. Remembering our Heritage : On 7 Feb 1885 the Grace of God touches our land with the Methodist Movement. God has swept this land with grace, health, wealth and prosperity. It's now for more than 123 years. God still remain faithful. These are God's Grace and Love to our children, to us, our forefather and to our nation.

2. According to the General Conference, we have 35,221 members and with 44 local Churches. We have the largest Christian membership in Singapore. In term of wealth, God has blessed us more than 100 fold, it's far greater than any monument yet to be built.

3. According to the Methodist websites at
http://www.methodist.org.sg/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 There are so many ministries that touches the life of so many people, young, the marginalised, the elderly and the death. These agencies are:

a. Garden of Rememberance( for those that asleep - my mum was there),
b. Methodist Co-Operative Society - to help the poor.
c. Methodist Missions Society - for missionary work all over the world ( I have went to mission trip in Nepal under MMS).
d. Methodist Schools - 3 private and 12 Government aided ( my 3 children are products of the Methodist Schools in Singapore).
e. Methodist School Foundation - to raise support to our Methodist Schools.
f. Methodist Welfare Services - youth, elderly, families and specialised help
g. Women's Society of Christian Service

4. Through the years, do you know how many faithful government ministers, leaders, the Methodist movement has produced?

The above is to remind ourselves, how faithful God's to us for more than 123 years. The Methodists in Singapore have enjoyed so much Grace, Wealth, Prosperity in so many areas of our nation's life.

Let's be wise and not to be fool into believing some new movement that have yet to stand the test of times. Let's remember to worship a "God who is" and not a "God who we want" . Let's remember what our suffering Apostle Paul taught us : "that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, become like him in his death." Phi 3:10

This is our roots!
Blessings,
Marco

When I read his article, I felt that I was in a good position to respond to him (like how Paul felt he was in a good position to respond to those who insisted on keeping the Law, when he called himself a "Hebrew of Hebrews" in Phil 3:5, so it was interesting that Marco had quoted Phil 3:10)

Dear Marco

I have been a Methodist all my life, and a 4th-generation one at that (in fact, my great-granddad was a Methodist pastor).

I used to take pride in calling myself a Methodist (like how I used to take pride in calling myself an ACSian). However, I now identify myself more as a "BenGener".

Frankly speaking, to be able to reach 35,000 in 123 years is really nothing to boast about. Compare that to reaching 22,000 in 15 years.

I believe it's about time we Methodists stopped patting ourselves on the back and resting on our laurels. We are like a sleeping giant that should be rising up to the potential that God has in store for us. Let's start emphasising the person of Jesus and the perfection of His finished work like what NewCre does, and see how God will likewise also cause us to multiply tenfold in 15 years.

Blessings

Well, yesterday he wrote me an email in response to my blog entry entitled "Scandalous and Moronic"

Dear Malcolm,

Good analysis on the teaching of the finished work of Christ for the past, present and future. It's admirable that you have search the scripture yourself - the blood of your forefather as Pastor is in you.

However, the truth on the present is not as straight forward as what you shared? Our security in the heavenly places(future) is confirmed based on the finished work of Christ(past, present and future). But to extend it into the present state of earthly claim:

"I was not aware that I could claim for myself prosperity, health, piece of mind, restfulness and acceptance with Daddy God because Jesus took upon Himself poverty, sickness, anguish, toil and separation from His Father when part of His passion was to be stripped naked, whipped, agonising about the cup, having the crown of thorns pressed into His head and being abandoned on the cross respectively."

(Note: I am aware that is a popular teaching from Prince, this is one of his favourite theme as he shouted out all these so many times!)

My personal view:

1. The claim of prosperity and health in the finished work of Christ are not verified by so many servants of the Lord including the writer, Paul himself on 1 Cor 1:23. It's strange that Paul mentioned so much suffering for Christ's sake if he can claim all those you shared above. The trust on the text and context of 1 Cor 1:18- 2:5 is at verse 25: "For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."

2. The Church in the time of Acts grew out of persecution and suffering not on health and prosperity of the believers. Similarly, the Church in China grew not because of the health and prosperity the foreign missionaries bring to them. In Acts and China the Churches grew out of pain, prison,..stripped naked, whipped, agonising..others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword, they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy -wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

This is the true meaning of the finished work of Christ!

3. Bro, I am not here to oppose the blessings of God but to ignore the complete teaching of Christ is inbalance. I like to enjoy health and prosperity - have the health to enjoy life and wealth to share with others and support the work of the Lord. But foolishness of God is wiser than men when he allowed pain and suffering to inflict on his chosen people, his Church, in his servant. *Honestly, I do not want all these suffering, I prefer to join you in that claim of abundant life -health and prosperity*but that's not the whole counsel of Christ.

The greatest test of a man's life or a Church is not when he/she is healthy and prosperous but when he/she is bearing the cross of Christ- like Job! The finished work of Christ is pain, suffering and shame for the past and the present but NOT THE FUTURE in our heavenly home!

Marco

This was my humble response to him

Thanks bro for sharing your thoughts with me. As much as I empathise with what the apostles and believers in China had to go through, there is a difference between us and them. They were not part of the end-time generation; we are :-D

The end-time generation (or what Ps Prince calls the "Benjamin Generation") is the generation which is to experience God's unmerited favour in greater and greater abundance. If you were to read the story of Joseph and his brothers, you will come across portions of scripture where Joseph showed favouritism to Benjamin by arranging via his unnamed helper to give him five times more food and drink (Gen 43:34) and five times more clothing, not to mention 300 shekels of silver (Gen 45:22).

And hence, likewise, in these last days, our Heavenly Joseph will arrange for the Holy Spirit to show great unmerited favour to us "BenGeners" and provide us exceedingly abundantly over and above all that we ask or imagine!

Since you have heard Ps Prince before, I am sure you know that the number five represents grace. What did Benjamin do to receive it? Nothing. He received it because he shared the same father and mother. The other ten brothers did not because they shared the same father but not the same mother. I don't know about you, but I now share the same mother Rachel (which is a picture of grace) and not Leah, Zilpah or Bilhah (which is a picture of the law).

I can lend you the "Benjamin Generation" DVD to watch. It is truly inspirational, especially the part of how God blessed Ps Prince with a BMW 7-series at the price of a 5-series.

Speaking of BMWs, I will be blogging about this sometime early next year, so do stay tuned :-D

Blessings
Malcolm
BenGener

Indeed, fellow brothers and sisters. Let us not identify as being a Methodist, or a NewCreationist, or a CityHarvester. Rather, let us identify with being a BenGener -- a member of the Benjamin Generation, and believe God for five times more! Amen?

Hi Mal,

I attend New Creation Church but I must say that it is just as dangerous to be proud that I am a New Creationer as it is to be proud that I am a Methodist.

Because that will shift the focus from the finished work of Jesus; our identity in Christ will be shifted to our identity in NewCre or the Methodist Church.

Consider the case where let's say you are proud to be called a Catholic but how that pride is dented when systematic child abuse was exposed in some quarters of the Catholic Church.

We should be proud in Christ for He will never cause us to be ashamed.

I love New Creation Church because Jesus is being preached every Sunday but if ever NewCre stops doing that (God forbid!), I will leave for another one that preaches Jesus, ??? years' history notwithstanding.

Amen! & again I say Amen! :)

Coincidentally, coupla days ago, the nick i placed on my msn was also "Benjamin Generationers" =D

Ironically, I'm learning not to be ashamed of being one and instead use this position to be a blessing to those around me and not around me ;p

"Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work--this is a gift of God." Ecc 5:19 NIV

All praises to JESUS!

The meaning of the name Benjamin is 'Son of my right hand'..

Interestingly, "Jamin" in Malay means "Assure or Guarantee"

As Benjamin Generationers, we shall inherit the full assurance by GRACE through FAITH.

Bro, I want to ask you something.
Why did you say that persecuted chinese Church are NOT the end-time generation? What kind of reason it will be?

Okay, I'm fine that we call ourselves Benjamin generation. But, do you think it's proper to judge others by saying that they're not the one?

And also, pastor Prince teaches us that Jesus has redeemed us from adam's curse, which is sickness, poverty, etc (but, he says it doesn't mean that we are free from persecution).
The persecutions against the gospel of Jesus Christ still exist and persecuted the grace believer.

What do you think?

Hi Malcolm,
I also have the same question with neosonic. I have watched the DVD "Benjamin Generation" by pastor Prince and I do believe that we are the BenGen which includes everyone in our time including people from all nations, so I am also curious how you came to conclude that the Chinese Church are not the BenGen. I do agree with neosonic that the persecutions exists for all true believers of the gospel as I am also being targeted by Satan for no rhyme and reason except that I walk in faith in God, but God is always good and I have come out of the situations more blessed and encouraged and I do believe that God will bless our fellow Chinese believers in due time. God always intervene at the right place and right time.

Hi all, again we are reminded that we are one united body in Christ... thank you for the sharings so far! =D Iron sharpens iron and I really love it when we share online like this.

As a Catholic I used to be confused by the various Christian denominations... perhaps we take too much human pride in these divisions that seperate the body of Christ instead of uniting them. This division does stumble non-believers who are finding out more about Christ.

Paul once said in 1 Cor 1:10-13:

10"But I urge and entreat you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in perfect harmony and full agreement in what you say, and that there be no dissensions or factions or divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in your common understanding and in your opinions and judgments.

11For it has been made clear to me, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions and wrangling and factions among you.

12What I mean is this, that each one of you [either] says, I belong to Paul, or I belong to Apollos, or I belong to Cephas (Peter), or I belong to Christ.

13Is Christ (the Messiah) divided into parts? Was Paul crucified on behalf of you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul?"

And yet fast forward to today and the churches are still at logger heads! =p

We were not baptised in the name of the Methodist Church or Anglican Church or New Creation Church... we are baptised in the Holy Spirit, accepting the salvation grace of Christ Jesus!

So at the end of the day we should not boast about which denomination we are for - we should boast about the Christ we are all a part of! =)

As for the Chinese Christians under persecution today, I believe they are also part of the end-time Benjamin generation. The bible talks about how when the Word of God reaches every corner of the Earth and all men get to hear about Jesus, that rapture takes place followed by the Tribulation. These Chinese brothers and sisters of us in China are part of this great work to preach the Word to every corner of China! God bless their ministries so that they touch hearts for Jesus as we wait for the rapture & the second coming of Christ!! =D

Lastly, on trials- Bible does say that there WILL be trials and tribulations, even as Christians, as this is a fallen world which we are in but not a part of.

BUT through it all, our security is this- because we are the righteousness of God in Christ, thus the victory has ALREADY been won on the cross. Even in the midst of our earthly trials and tribulations in the present, we can hold secure to this knowledge.

I think Pastor Lian once addressed this in a sermon where she said that sometimes as new Christians people are told that they will not go through trials and tribulations, so when it happens to them, their faith is shaken.

Jesus's reminder to us in John 16:33 is as follows -

"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Perfect love casts out all fears - even as we are being tried and tested in this life, we who are established in the perfect love of Christ know that we have nothing to fear as the situation has been taken care of. =D

In the epistles, Paul also never said that we will not experience trouble in our lives, but that even these troubles will pass as we endure and remain patient in Christ. =)

In 1 Thess 3:1 -

We sent Timothy, who is our brother and God's fellow worker[a]in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, 3so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were destined for them.

1 Peter 1:6,7 -

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that your faith (believing and speaking)—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

James 1:3 -

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith (believing and speaking) develops perseverance (patience, strength to continue on).

On 9th November this year, Pastor preached -

Sometimes, God closes the door to us. At that time, we wonder why this is happening to us. However, when we look back, we say "thank you" to the Lord.

Also on 20th July this year, it was preached at our church pulpit -
We should not put our faith in God's love for us based on circumstances. Even when things are going wrong and we are going through a trial, we still thank God that He loves us. We do not know what is going on and we do not understand how our life has made such a turn but Jesus is in control.

To summarise this thought -

There will be trials now and then, but we know that God's will for us (see Jer 29:11) will persevere! Jesus is in control and we just have to keep believing and speaking & remaining patient in the LORD. The VICTORY has been won so we remain in the security of this perfect love. Sometimes God's will confuses us because it is not what we ask for, but God knows better and He might say NO to something that we think is a blessing, because He knows better and is making sure He averts away tragedy from our lives.

So lor sor... but yea my thoughts haha ^.^"

Brother,

I'll make myself very clear first. I'm not trying to attack you personally, or criticise Joseph Prince's

Salvation is by grace. Everything we receive is by grace through faith.

What we tend to forget as believers is that whatever we do should be for the profit of all, not merely ourselves.

I'm questioning the statement that the church in China is not part of the end-time generation compared to the rest of us.

The way it was phrased gives the idea that we're an elite group and the rest are not, almost like how the Jehovah's Witnesses talk.

I'm interested in hearing from you.

Dear all

Maybe I should rephrase what I said about our brothers and sisters in China.

What I meant is that they are the end-time generation, but may not realise that they are until someone tells them.

Therefore, let us pray that God will raise up grace preachers there to reveal to them what Jesus has already accomplished for them and what their true identity is.

I am reminded of the story about how this guy signed up for a cruise and spent the first few days in his cabin eating biscuits and drinking plain water. His neighbour noticed this and told him that he could have eaten at the restaurant, because those meals were actually part of the deal...

Hi all,
As I read this post, I can't help but think of this verse about both churches, "For of His fullness have we received, grace upon grace, blessing upon blessing."(John 1)

Both the Methodist Church, the great institution, and New Creation Church, the new kid in the block, are richly blessed and deeply loved by Him who gave His life for both.

When God looks down on Singapore, he does not see the church in all its denominational distinction or sized, He just sees one Church, His Body and His Bride, comprising all who put their trust in Him.

Jesus said that all men will know that we are His disciples by our love for one another.Jn 13:35

This is a challenge for us as we sought to share the Gospel of Grace with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

1 Cor 13:8
Love (God's love) never fails.

Gal 5:6
Let's share the Word of faith, the Word of Christ through love
