Last week, I blogged about grace being the source of good works. You can read about that here.
In other words, we do good works not "in order to" but we do works "as a result of".
Under the Old Covenant, man had to do good in order to earn God's approval and acceptance.
Under the New Covenant, God has already given us His acceptance, and because we are accepted, the gratitude overflows and we respond by doing good to others.
I recently received a message on Facebook from someone I would refer to as P.
Hi Malcolm,
i am having problem identifying "dead works" in my day to day life (i'm certain i have plenty of those as soon as i can tell the difference!). i read something recently from angie's blog and she cited some examples of dead works, eg. helping to ferry a neighbour's child from school. i have to admit that it confused me somewhat.
when does doing something good out of the kindness of your heart become a "dead work"? i'm hoping you can help shed some light.
thanks and shalom,
P
This was my response to her:
Hi P
For me, I will go by the presence and absence of peace.
Depending on the time and season, a work may be good at some stage but become a dead one at another.
For example, I gave out quite a number of copies of D2R two years ago and D2RD last year, and even went to the extent of going to the post office to mail out some of them. Back then, I felt a sense of purpose and fulfilment in doing so because it came out of an overflow, of being grateful to God for the extent of the undeserved favour He had bestowed upon me. There was much joy and peace that accompanied these acts.
Nowadays, I still get requests every now and then for the books but have decided to turn them down politely because it has become somewhat of an obligatory chore to do so.
The source has to be God's grace, and our deeds a response to that grace. If it is done out of an obligation, then it is better not to do so.
What I strongly believe is that the Holy Spirit in us, will give us both the joy and desire to carry out good works. If there is neither, then a work, however noble, is but a dead one.
After replying to her, the LORD brought to mind something that happened 2 weeks ago. I am currently on a sabbatical from my own church and as a result had informed my senior pastor that I will not be tithing to my church during the period of my sabbatical. You can read about that here.
Whenever Ps Reuben preaches, my wife and I will attend our home church, but when the offering bag is passed, I will not put anything in it. But 2 weeks ago, when I was attending the youth service and Ps Reuben was preaching on Jonah 3, somehow I felt the LORD prompting me to put a $50 into the bag. As the bag was approaching, there was another voice telling me "Hello? Aren't you on a sabbatical? Are you giving the right signal to your senior pastor if you do that? Save that and sow it into One-North instead."
Even though I struggled in my mind, yet there was sense of peace in my heart. So I went ahead to drop the note into the bag, even though I was under no legal obligation to do so. At that point, I was reminded of what Paul said about God loving a cheerful giver. If we give out a sense of duty and obligation, then it is better not to because it is not done in the right spirit.
And so what would have been a dead work on another occasion was a good work this time around :-)

Hi Mal
I was listening to PP's sermon earlier from the album "The Covenant of Grace and the Kindness of God"'s disc 3 (track 4) when I came across the part where he addressed good works & dead works.
I felt it was divine 'appt' becos I just went thru a really bad attack from the adversary from what I thought was dead works. I needed fresh revelation of God's grace & kindness towards me.
PP said that at the cross, our bad behaviour cannot disqualify us any more than our good behaviour can qualify us for His presence. Our works does not make any significant changes to our relationship with Him. We are righteous not by what we do but by what Jesus did. Our good works does not endear us to Him neither does our bad works makes Him leaves us. It is all Jesus in us that God sees & is well pleased. Good works is impt only to man so that others may see our good works and give glory to God. (Matt 5:16, 1 Peter 2:12)
Dead works on the other hand is something we do to make us righteous. In some religious circle, ppl attend church in order to be righteous.
In your example, even if you had given out of a sense of duty & obligation; even if it is not done in the right spirit, it is not considered dead works because you're not giving to earn brownie points with Daddy.
I believe there'll be circumstances where we're required to do things out of obligation. I do that sometimes but I did it out of love for that someone or just simply knowing God loves that someone. I didn't have to do it so that I can receive more blessing. Why? Cos i have every blessing in Christ Jesus already!
The past coupla days,
I had believed the devil's lies that dead works are sin and is not pleasing to God. I had believed that my dead works were self efforts. Works that came from the flesh; out of self-enthusiasm.
When the adversary can't get the grace believer to see that they're no longer righteous, he'll point them to their works and condemn them for doing everything that seems to be self-seeking. And this is something we MUST NOT accept.
And really, whatever we do, ONLY God can sees our motives. even the change of motives! What started from a bad selfish motive that changes to good, God sees it. Or what started from a good motive to bad, God also sees it. But does it matters? No. Not at all! God said He'll never leave us or forsake us. It's not about our doing. The fact that many of us are enthusiastic to serve Him is because we realised how much we're loved and we want others to know about it too. :)
Hi Angie,
Thanks for your sharing above about what you've gone through!
Hey, did you 'liaise' with Ps Lian huh? I just came back from the 3rd service.
You gals were talking about the same thing!
I've just gone through something you've shared in
"The past coupla days,
I had believed the devil's lies that dead works are sin and is not pleasing to God. I had believed that my dead works were self efforts. Works that came from the flesh; out of self-enthusiasm."
I had prepared my class children for an inter-class performance and they didn't do as well as before even though I did a lot more for them out of enthusiam and love.
Boy, the voice of condemnation came in the form of a whisper: see you got into your self-efforts etc that's why God did not bless you etc.
You do get the drift, rite?
Lost my peace that day before I decided that it is His Righteousness that qualifies me. So nothing of my right doing or wrong doing will disqualify me from His blessings in my life.
Well, at the end of week, the results came out that my class children got 4th and 5th in spite of their less than average performance. Not only that, they garnered the highest number of votes from my fellow colleagues. That's absolutely God's Grace!
Thanks, Angie, for the clarification. Love the way you've put it. Kind of nailed it home for me for what Ps Lian has shared that we reign in life through the abundance of Grace and His gift of Righteousness!
Praise God!
Peggy
Hi Bro,
Agree that we should go by the peace of God in our hearts.
Everthing that we do should be motivated by the love of God.We do go the extra mile especially for people that concern us.
Everywhere Jesus went He was always giving. He preached,He healed the sick, fed the multitude, etc.
He was such a giving Person. But then,He also took time first to recharge in solitude with the Father.
And He also took priority spending time with His 12 disciples esp. Peter,James and John.
Today was a very satisfying day for me bro.In the morning my family went for morning service at CEFC.After lunch I sent my wife to work and attend the afternoon service at the Rock with my youngest daughter.
After service we went for the bookfair, had dinner and just sat near the Esplanade mall looking at the sea and had a good long chat.
Looking forward for more of these "divine moments."
Yes Praise God! Thanks Peggy for sharing your testimony! I do understand what you must have felt. :) your sharing is encouraging for me too in that i thought i was the odd sheep in His flock :p
I was listening to PP's sermon on the Benjamin Generation last nite and he said something that sticked to me. "Don't let anyone rob us, the sense of grace that we have in our heart" The only person who will do that i guess is the adversary because he wants to keep us from the will of God. And PP said the way to do that is to establish our heart through hearing the preaching of grace. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Phil 4:7) :)
Have a highly favored week bros/sis! We are truly sons & daughters of God, a new creation made in the image of Christ Jesus. We have all things and we can do all things thru Him in us. Praise Jesus!
