Was Jesus...?

Friday, 15th May 2009

Some time ago, I was exchanging text messages with a brother about whether Jesus was good-looking. He was of the opinion that Jesus was just ordinary-looking, which was my stand previously as well.

But having embraced the grace gospel, I am persuaded that Jesus was extremely good-looking.

It is with this background that I feel prompted to start a series of meditations entitled "Was Jesus...?"

For a start, I will cover the following topics

1. Was Jesus handsome?
2. Was Jesus poor?
3. Was Jesus homeless?
4. Was Jesus always a nice guy?
5. Was Jesus a weakling?

The arguments would be supported with Scripture, of course.

Meanwhile, please feel free to suggest other topics that may be of interest.

I got one !
Does God look like an old grandpa or someone young and strong and handsome?

As scripture records God is homeless:
Isa 66:1 This is what the LORD says:"Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me?
Where will my resting place be?
As in the begining, the Spirit of God "hovering"(Gen 1:2),told Abraham looks for a city,(Heb 11.8-10), Jacob dreamed of the place(Gen 28:1-22),Moses given a blueprint to build the Tabernacles ( 1 Chron.21:29),David gave all his treasure to perfect it (1Chron 29:3); but history records all this destroy. God has no dwelling place. NT. Jesus said "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." (Luke 9:58)
And at pentecost "ekklesia" Church was born. Finally a living stones, that express the nature of God.

I ponder are we building church or are being church.?

the above was learned from "FROM ETERINITY TO HERE" by Frank Viola.

Jesus looked normal, like you and me, not more handsome or more muscles.

If He did looked like superman, or like Saul, the nemesis of King David, surely you would not need a spy within His inner group to identify Him to the soldiers?

I disagree. As a carpenter for 30 years you would naturally have developed a reasonable amount of muscles, and as a sacrificial Lamb, the Lamb MUST be spotless and unblemished. And how to check a lamb for perfection apart from its appearance?

Therefore, as Man's representative to God, Jesus was a perfect man, strong and manly.
Amen

If you mean Jesus is handsome in the sense that he had no defects, pimples or moles on His face, then I agree.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.Someone may say that Brad Pitt is very handsome while another may not think so.

I agree with AfoC,

If Jesus looked outstanding, there's no need to bribe Judas to identify him to the soldiers out to capture him.

I am also speculating that if Jesus looked outstanding, his looks would have distracted people, especially the ladies, from paying attention to what he has to say. The bible did not record anyone being awed by his looks but rather people, even the temple guards, were awed by what he did and said:

John 7:45-46 (NKJV)
45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”
46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”

Matt 9:32-33 (NKJV)
32 As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed.
33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!”

Hey Bernard

After the cross, we believers are the house of God, our body the temple of God, in which God's Spirit dwell, isn't it?

As for Jesus' look, like what bro Jeff wrote, handsome or beauty is in the eye of the beholder ... as for me, I believe Jesus is without blemish, and He would have a personality that captivates people, a natural leader without pretense, that when He said, "Follow Me, ..." to Peter and Andrew, the bible says they IMMEDIATELY left their nets and followed Him! Try telling your colleagues / children or even your pets to follow you, and they will give you the "huh? are you sure? why should I? ..." thingy you know.

Shalom Shalom,
William

2 Cor 5:12,16

For we do not commend ourselves again to you,but give you opportunity to boast on our behalf, that you may have an answer for those who boast in appearance and not in heart.

Therefore, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh.Even though we have known Christ in the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.

1 Sam 16:7
For the Lord does not sees as man sees;for man looks at the outward apperance but the Lord looks at the heart.

Whether Christ is handsome or not, what's more important is we do not judge man in a carnal, earthly way, according to appearances, human credentials,or race.

We see people as precious souls and Christians as fellow brothers and sisters who are the righteousness of God in Christ.

We see Jesus as the resurrected and ascended Lord sitting at the right hand of the Father and we are seated with Him in the heavenly realms far above all principalities and powers.
