In my interactions with various people IRL ("in real life") and on social media the past few days, the Lord has impressed upon me to start a series of reflections, which I will blog about over the next few days.
1. Chalk and Cheese
2. Rise and Fall
3. Initiator and Responder
Let's kick off the series with "chalk and cheese".This is an idiom used to describe 2 people who, even though they share something similar, like the same parents or lineage, are actually completely different from one another.2. Rise and Fall
3. Initiator and Responder
I recently had lunch with Dn Douglas Loh on 28 January. One of the things he mentioned to me is that this other megachurch has also embarked on a "day and night" encounter with God, which on the surface appears somewhat similar to what our church also just recently launched on the Gospel Partner app, what we call the "The New Day&Night Experience".
Let's refer to the other megachurch as "M6", ie. a megachurch ("M") focused on the efforts of men ("6"), whereas I will refer to our church as "M5", ie. a megachurch ("M") established on grace ("5").
And then on 6 Feb, a fellow CG member explained in greater detail the mechanics of M6's twice-a-day encounter because a friend of hers sent her the link. What that church has been doing are Zoom-based prayer meetings every day from 5am to 7am, and then again from 10pm-12am. Typically, about 3,000 to 5,000 people will log in.
Others in the Body of Christ may commend both M5 and M6 for "levelling up" in 2026.
However, may I humbly submit to you that the two initiatives are really like chalk and cheese.
We see a very excellent illustration recorded for us in Lk 10:38-42. There were 2 sisters named Mary and Martha. Both undeniably loved our Lord Jesus and had noble motives.
But the expression of their love for Jesus could not have been more starkly different. Indeed, it was like chalk and cheese.
One busied herself in the kitchen and got herself depleted and weary in the process. The other sat at the feet of Jesus, just patiently drawing from our Lord and being replenished and strengthened in the process.
I summarise this in the table below:
M5 = Megachurch focused on grace
M6 = Megachurch focused on men's efforts
Our church, however, does not see the need to showcase or broadcast how many million subscribers are encountering God via The New Day&Night experience. After all, our quiet time with the Lord is supposed to be one on one, just like what Jesus Himself practised when He would withdraw Himself from His disciples to be alone, just communing and spending quality time with His Father.
P.S. The New Day&Night Experience can be accessed at this following link:
