I make it a point to have a lunch appointment with my wife once a week.
The week before, we went to the makeshift Balestier market to eat Satay Bee Hoon. This was on the recommendation of her mom (who had on previous occasions travelled by bus all the way from Joo Chiat with her dad just to eat it!). I must say that my mom-in-law has fabulous taste because that Satay Bee Hoon is simply delicious. The gravy is full of peanuts and not too oily, the squid is succulent and not tough and fibrous, and the prawns taste very fresh.
It was thus not surprising when I saw a Yummy King sticker on the stall!

Just last week, our lunch date took us to East Coast Road, where we ate Katong Laksa. It is not an exaggeration to say that there are at least 5 different Katong Laksa stalls in a stretch of 200m, each one claiming to be the original one!
So which one did we end up eating? The one at the junction of East Coast Road and Ceylon Road which also happens to have a Yummy King sticker! As we sat down to order our food, we also noticed a picture of the ex-Minister Dr Tony Tan and his wife with the stallowners as their claim to fame.
As I reflected back on those meals, I realised that both these stalls had Yummy King stickers. Yet others will have Makansutra stickers as endorsements.
Drawing a parallel, some may prefer the King James Version of the Bible because of the poetic beauty of the language. Yet others would prefer The Message because the contemporary novel-like paraphrase is easier to read.
Like it or not, we as humans, use yardsticks to assess value.
When it comes to hawker food, what cuts it for me is that it is Yummy-King endorsed.
When it comes to the version of the Bible, what cuts it for me is that it sticks closely to the original Hebrew and Greek. That is why I use the New American Standard.
When it comes to sermons and books, what cuts it for me is that is is Christocentric and emphasis is placed on the gospel of grace and the finished work on the cross. That is why I have invested in the entire JPM library of anointed resources and continue to receive CD sermons through the post each week.
You can check out JPM catalog here, and let me know if you want to borrow anything from it.
Hmm, so where shall we eat this week? Let me check out that Yummy King list...
Shalom
Malcolm
