Shut Up, Move On

Wednesday, 8th August 2007

On Valentine's Day this year, my 3L7 cell group had a romantic dinner together. During that dinner, one of my cell members mentioned about an upcoming event on 26th - 28th July 2007 called "Change & Influence", which was the theme for the Eagles Leadership Conference 2007 (ELC 2007) organised by Eagles Communications. We decided to sign up together as a cell.

Even though 26th and 27th July was U-1 and U (those of you who are my colleagues would know what these stand for, but for the benefit of the others, U means "ultimo" and it is the day that we close the books each month, with U-1 being the day before that), I trusted the LORD to provide a way for me to attend the Conference.

Praise be to God that my leave was approved by the CFO's secretary (my boss is now on a 6-month sabbatical since May 07 and my big boss was travelling at the time when I applied for leave).

Anyway, the Conference was a wonderful experience, and I saw our 3 Pastors, as well as the TRAC President Rev Wee Boon Hup, District Superintendent West Rev Jonathan Seet, and Faith Methodist Church PIC Rev Kow Shih Meng there.

Here are highlights of ELC 2007 for your viewing pleasure:

One of the speakers at the Conference was a guy by the name of Paul McGee. He gives motivational talks based on godly principles for a secular audience. He is known as The SUMO Guy, because of the S.U.M.O principle that he came up with, which stands for Shut Up, Move On (hence the title of today's blog entry). He has also written two books that made it to the bestsellers on Amazon.com

Essentially, he is trying to convey that we should not let past baggages and failures prevent us from experiencing victory. We should "shut up" what has happened already in the past, and then to "move on" from there.

The apostle Paul himself says in Phil 3:13 "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead". If Paul had allowed what he did in the past (persecuting Christians, approving Stephen's stoning, etc) to affect him, then he would not have been able to be used by God to bring the gospel to the Gentiles and write two-thirds of the New Testament.

Which brings me to another excerpt of a DVD compilation called Humorous Bible Illustrations, which I blogged about back in January 2007. This one is entitled "If-Only-itis"
